Artist Statement: The Junction series

What I remember as home feels distant and removed as the landscape has changed to make way for housing and industry. I feel out of place back home, save for in the small area of Shenandoah Junction. My family has roots here, spanning back multiple generations. The Junction is an oddity. It has seemingly stayed stagnant while the world around it has changed. Intrigued by this quality, I find myself returning to the Junction where the past feels physically close and within arm’s reach.
With the work from The Junction, I explore the physical space of Shenandoah Junction, while examining my personal history with the area. I try to connect the dots between memories, stories, and what remains of a fading lifestyle and community. Using archival family photos and my own images, I have created a series interweaving my own experience with that of my family and the passage of time in the Junction.
